About Last Year’s Boot Camp

On October 22-23, CryoLife hosted an Aortic Valve and Root Boot Camp attended by 32 cardiovascular surgery residents chosen by their Program Directors from nearly half of the official U.S. training programs and supported by 18 distinguished faculty from these programs.

The stated aim of the Boot Camp was captured in the subtitle, “toward surgical skill-set mastery with mentored simulation.”

This unique educational collaboration between industry and academia was fashioned after the more broadly focused annual Thoracic Surgery Directors Association Boot Camp held at the University of North Carolina, but was more narrowly focused on the surgical anatomy and various procedures of the aortic valve and root.

Each of the residents rotated through five separate Modules during the two days:

  • Aortic Root Anatomy
  • Aortic Valve Replacement
  • Aortic Valve Repair/Spare
  • Aortic Root Replacement
  • Ross Procedure

Each Module was taught by acknowledged surgical experts, who facilitated the unique opportunity for the residents to learn and practice the various surgical steps required with each of these procedures, employing risk-free biological “simulators.”
The course co-directors were William F. Northrup, III, M.D., a cardiovascular surgeon and Vice President of Physician Relations and Education at CryoLife and George L. Hicks, Jr., M.D., Chief of Cardiac Surgery and Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York.
