A Grandmother’s Story
When the husband of a 63 year-old-grandmother died two years ago, she was deeply saddened by her personal loss. However, her independent spirit and love for family provided the strength she needed to carry on with her life. Unfortunately, her fortitude was once again challenged when she learned that severe peripheral vascular disease had developed and was threatening the continued use of her leg. This strong-willed grandmother couldn’t bear the thought of how an amputation would affect her active lifestyle and potentially reduce her ability to interact with her three grandchildren. In an attempt to maintain her quality of life, she chose the implantation of a saphenous vein over amputation. Her recent surgery was considered successful and the implanting surgeon is very hopeful that his patient will continue to enjoy her active life for many years to come.
